Dog Treat Recipes

Carob Treats for Small Dogs

These are Golly's favorite homemade treats in the whole world. Since dogs and chocolate don't mix but dogs love the flavor of chocolate, this is a great solution. These treats don't take a lot of time to make if you have a food processor and you can make them as small as you need to! They're tiny and crunchy, a perfect treat for our little dogs. (Fran likes them, too - she says they taste like crunchy chocolate chip cookies.)

Ingredients:
1 cup carob chips
2 cups flour
1 cup powdered milk
1 egg
1 tbsp vegetable oil
a little water

Preheat oven to 315°. Spray 2 large cookie sheets with vegetable oil spray. Process the carob chips to a fairly fine consistency. (Golly likes to make sure the carob chips are OK by tasting a couple.) Add flour and powdered milk, process just to mix. Add egg, oil and a little water. Process to a pizza dough-like ball (holds together but is not too sticky). Add water a little at a time. Don't let the mixture get too wet or the treats will puff up. Gather the dough into a ball and place on a cookie sheet (photo 1). Split into 2, and reserve one ball. Press into a disk. Sprinkle with flour to prevent sticking (photo 2). Roll dough until it's about 1/8 inch thick (photo 3). Using a plastic ruler and pizza cutter, cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch squares (photo 4). Repeat with other dough ball.

Cracking the Carob TreatsBake for 30 - 40 minutes, rotating cookie sheets and switching positions halfway through. When finished baking, the edge treats will begin to separate - they may not be totally hard. Remove from oven. Cool for about 10 minutes. Crack into individual treats. (Golly likes to test the treats now.) If necessary, put sheets back in oven (you may want to consolidate onto one pan) with oven turned off. Let the treats crisp overnight. The next morning, place treats into jar. (Now is another good time to test the treats!)

You can substitute other ingredients for carob. Our dogs love carrot treats - put in a couple full-size carrots or a handful of baby carrots. You'll need to cut down the water if you use carrots or apples.
