Just because you’ve got 6 feet of leash…

One of my pet peeves is dog owners who let their dogs roam around at the end of the leash.  Just because you’ve got 6 feet of leash doesn’t mean you have to use it all! For a small dog, 6 feet isn’t a whole lot of leash, because the dog is way down there, and you’re way up there. I definitely prefer a 6-foot leash for my little dogs because that allows me to have a little freedom, and the dog doesn’t feel like he’s going to be stepped on all the time. I can be on the sidewalk and the dog can sniff a tree. But if I see another person walking a dog, I’ll reel in the leash, looping it in my hand. I don’t know if the other dog is friendly, or if my dog will be friendly toward the other dog! But I don’t stretch my arm up with all 6 feet still hanging down. Because, my arm will get tired. Or the dog will pull my arm down. He might be little, but he can certainly pull on the leash! I don’t back away, but I bring my dog near. With my dog close to me I have more control and we can approach the other person and dog without intruding on their space.
