Dogs are love money can buy

Literature would have you believe that there’s no price for love. Its value is beyond compare, absolutely priceless. That may be true among people, but dogs are true love that money can, in fact, buy.

Dogs are the epitome of unconditional love. They can be selfless, generous, even heroic when it comes to protecting the ones they love. And their love is absolutely independent of their person’s station in life. A dog’s love is worth valuing.

The most astonishing aspect of a dog’s devotion to their owners is how it persists even when it’s not deserved. Think of the news stories you’ve read about animal hoarders, abusers, puppy mills, or even dog fighting situations. These poor unfortunates almost never turn on their owners. The dogs rescued from the football player’s dog torture camp were rehabilitated. Some even became therapy dogs.

We do deserve dogs

For most of us, whether your dog is a pedigreed show dog or a mutt from shelter, our dogs are our constant companions, best friends, and this week, our four-legged Valentines. Consider this week an opportunity to show the ones you love, who love you, how much they matter.

Dogs don’t need much in material possessions. Enough to eat, a blanket to lie on, and you. Maybe some really, really good snacks. So what’s the best present you can possibly give your dog?

Give them more you

You are the best gift you can give your dog. Leave your phone in your pocket when you go for a walk. Take an extra few minutes to initiate a game of tug. How about something as simple as hand-feeding your dog? It’s absolutely one of the best ways to bond with your dog. It requires your undivided attention and works great for little training games. You’ll be amazed at how your dog will love showing off their skills when they have your focus.

Every day try to carve out some time just for your dog. If you have more than one, give each one just a few minutes of you. All to themselves. Not sharing. No distractions. See what an amazing creature your dog is. Even if you just sit and talk – use a funny voice, giggle when you get an adorable head tilt. Appreciate your dog’s devotion.

No limit on love

Many dog people believe that there’s a “heart dog” – the one whose presence was part of you. The one whose absence makes you feel hollow inside. That may be true – but there’s no limit on love. And no law that says only one heart dog is possible.

When people say they’ll never get another dog because the loss is too painful, we understand. And disagree. You can’t make the loss overshadow the life. Another love doesn’t diminish the memory – it honors it. And there’s always room for more love in our lives and hearts.

Rescues have “adoption” fees – it is still buying a dog. As long as people get their dogs from a reputable source, they should make the decision that’s right for them.
